Ingredients
- Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes (thinly sliced)
- Sharp cheddar cheese (grated)
- Heavy cream
- Butter
- Garlic, minced
- Onion, thinly sliced (optional)
- Milk
- Salt
- Black pepper
- Nutmeg (optional)
- Fresh parsley (garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and butter a baking dish.
- In a saucepan, melt butter and sauté garlic until fragrant.
- Add cream and milk; warm gently and season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
- Stir in shredded cheese until melted and smooth.
- Layer sliced potatoes in the dish, pouring cheese sauce between layers.
- Cover with foil and bake 45 minutes until potatoes are tender.
- Uncover and bake 20–30 minutes more until golden and bubbling; rest before serving.
Notes
- For extra flavor, consider adding cooked bacon or ham between the layers.
- Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to thicken.
