Ingredients
- Sliced beef (roast beef or shaved steak)
- Swiss or provolone cheese
- Thick-cut bread (sourdough preferred)
- Butter
- Yellow onions
- Beef broth
- Garlic
- Fresh thyme (optional)
- Black pepper
Instructions
- Slowly sauté sliced onions in butter over medium-low heat until deeply caramelized; set aside.
- Warm beef gently in a small pan with a splash of beef broth and a pinch of pepper.
- Butter one side of each bread slice.
- On the unbuttered side, layer cheese, warm beef, caramelized onions, then more cheese.
- Top with another slice of bread, buttered side out.
- Grill in a skillet over medium heat until bread is golden and cheese is fully melted.
- Slice and serve hot (optional side of warm broth for dipping).
